RSS Feeds - The best way to keep up with websites

What's an RSS Feed?
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. RSS feeds are a way for websites to distribute new content as it becomes available. RSS alerts you to a website's newest headlines and features.

RSS solves a problem for people who regularly use the web. It allows you to easily stay informed by retrieving the latest content from the sites you are interested in. You save time by not needing to visit each site individually. You ensure your privacy, by not needing to join each site's email newsletter.

Think of an RSS feed as a file that contains a blog or website's most recent entries. By subscribing to a site's feed, you will automatically be notified when that website contains new posts or entries.
Instead of checking sites repeatedly for updates or receiving too many email newletters, RSS feeds bring your favorite websites to you!

How can I read RSS Feeds?
You need a free RSS "aggregator" or reader. Some readers run on your desktop and are as easy to use as common e-mail software, while others are web-based.
Here are some my favorite reader options:
  • Google Reader - pretty easy to set up & use and you probably already have a Google account (like Gmail, Picasa, iGoogle). This is a web based reader - which means you go to  www.google.com/reader
  • FeedDemon – this is a desktop application that runs similar to MS Outlook. This is a great program that can be used "as-is" but is also very customizable
An RSS feed can be identified by this universal symbol (orange square w/ white lines).

When you see it on a website, clicking will usually direct you to that site's feed.
From there, you can either copy and paste the link to subscribe to the feed in Reader, or in the case of many browsers, click a button to subscribe directly.
You can also subscribe directly from RSS Reader, like in Google Reader, it will offer you some suggestions of feeds you might be interested in following.
RSS Feeds are great for freebie hunting, coupons & promos, employment searches, news, financial/stocks, parenting suggestions...basically any site you find yourself visiting frequently would be great. Also, any topic your interested in, like tech & electronics, gardening, politics are great to keep up with by RSS feeds.

This may seem more complicated than it actually is once you start using it. But if you have ANY questions about how to use RSS feeds/readers, how to subscribe to my blog by RSS, or any other question you may have, please just post a comment on this blog and I'll help you.

Dislike the New Facebook? Here's How to Go Back - Freebie Spot

Dislike the New Facebook? Here's How to Go Back - Freebie Spot
Here is a great blog post for those unhappy with new Facebook changes & how to fix it. I don't think I mind the changes (perhaps I like them but I'm not sure yet)...

"Facebook recently changed the news feed altering how you see your friends’ activity as well as the activity of the pages you like. Because of these changes, you (and I!) are missing out on a lot of Facebook updates from both friends and pages.

I’ve received several emails from my Facebook fans who have stated that they are not seeing my Facebook updates. And trust me, I’ve noticed it too! Freebie Spot traffic has literally been cut in half since the new Facebook layout went live. Bummer. So if you’re not seeing updates from Freebie Spot (or any other page for that matter) on Facebook, here is how to fix it.

Create a List

In order to see all updates from Freebie Spot, you will need to create a “List”. For simplicity, I suggest calling it “Freebie Spot”.
  1. Visit Facebook and click “Home” in the upper right corner of your screen.
  2. On the left side of page, click the word “Lists” (you may have to click the “More” link to see it) and then click the “Create List” button.
  3. Give your list a name (I suggest calling it “Freebie Spot”) and click “Create list”.
  4. While in the “Freebie Spot” list, click the “Add friends” link (it might take a few seconds to load).
  5. Click the “Friends” button in the upper, left of the window and then click “Pages”.
  6. Type in “Freebie Spot” in the box on the right and once you see the Freebie Spot Facebook page, click the image to place a check mark and then click “Done”.
  7. You will now be taken to your Freebie Spot list page and you will see my updates.
  8. To make sure you see everything I post, click the “Manage List” in the upper right corner, then click “Choose Update Types” and make sure all 6 “updates to show” are checked.
  9. Finally, click the “Lists” link on the left hand side again, click the little pencil to the left of “Freebie Spot”, and click “Add to Favorites”. Just click the “Freebie Spot” link in your favorites and you will see all of my posts.
So now, instead of only seeing top stories as determined by Facebook, you’ll never miss a Freebie Spot update. Yay! Keep in mind, you can use this same method but call the list something like “Everyone”, and then add all of your friends and pages to the list. You will then have an all-inclusive list with updates displaying like they used to.

Don’t Want to Go Through All That?

If the above steps seem like too much work to you, then there is an alternative. Just tell Facebook what you want to display as “Top News.” Find a story in your news feed from Freebie Spot (which I had a hard time with this and made an update on my page just to see it!). Hover over the top, right-hand corner of the update to display the arrow. Click the arrow to display the drop down box and then click “Mark as top story.” This is supposed to tell Facebook what you like and they will try to display more stories like it. There are no guarantees for this as I’m not even sure it works. :(

Still Not Happy?

If you’re still not happy (don’t worry, I’m not either), then share your feedback with Facebook. Let them know they are ruining your Facebook experience and to put things back the way they were!"

LastPass

When it comes to freebie hunting, LastPass is almost a must, especially for promos that you have to be really quick to get (P&G giveaways, Allure, etc). It is also incredibly useful even if you're not into promos.
LastPass is an extension that can be used to fill forms, remember passwords, automatically log you into website and/or generate more secure passwords.
LastPass is a free application that can be used with most browsers. It can also be used on Android - either by purchasing app or use free by creating bookmarklets.
This probably doesn't give enough explanation so visit their site to learn more or comment/email me for more info.
